Apple Valley Dental opens doors in Sunnyside

This past Saturday Lower Valley residents had the opportunity to see what Apple Valley Dental and Orthodontics is all about after watching the building take shape over the course of several months.

The Sunnyside clinic was opened to the public, featuring many fun activities for those attending the open house event.

The new dental facility is quite attractive and Dr. Derek Thompson is proud of the end result.

The dentist likes to compare a visit to the office, one of three under his ownership, to a Disneyland experience.

The state-of-the art facility features six video game screens for children to play on while awaiting their turn to have their teeth cleaned.

There is also a playground for younger children with crazy animals and fun toys on another side of the waiting area.

There's more for those who are waiting, however. There is a theater area, where patients can watch animated films, while sitting in a jungle-like setting.

Once patients are ready to be seen, the youngsters will be taken to an exam room with animated-looking characters peeking down from the ceiling. The patients in both the children's area and the adult area of the facility can watch a movie on a flatscreen on the wall in front of the dental chair. Once the chair is reclined, another flatscreen television is positioned directly overhead for further viewing pleasure.

"I literally followed a rainbow to this location," Thompson said this past Saturday.

He said he was searching for a location from which his staff could better serve Lower Valley residents and a rainbow ended at the site near Grand Cinemas Yakima Valley on Picard Place.

Thompson said there will be 11 dentists cycled through the office. Each dentist, he said, has areas of expertise that will be utilized to best serve the patients.

For example, patients needing root canals will be scheduled on days when a dentist proficient in the procedure is available.

An orthodontist will be available on a regular basis along with two general dentists.

"There are three orthodontists who will cycle through the office regularly to provide patients with the best ortho care possible," said Thompson.

Orthodontic patients have a room specifically designed for their care. That room contains six orthodontic chairs.

Thompson said the approach at Apple Valley Dental is to work together as a team to provide the highest level of quality care possible.
