YAKIMA - Members of the Mabton VFW post are active in the community and recently attended the National VFW convention in Yakima.
At the convention, Post Commander of VFW #10384 David Rodriguez and Post Quartermaster Manuel Soto were presented the white hat award for outstanding service within the post.
Soto was also named the community service chairman at the state level. He will collect monthly reports from the 123 Washington state posts, as well as the ladies auxiliaries statewide.
Those reports document the community service activities of each post. The reports are sent to the National VFW, according to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Washington.
"Community service for the VFW involves helping our veterans and their families, or even giving aid to others that are not military," said Robin Piatt, VFW secretary for the Department of Washington.
She said other community service activities include donations to veteran organizations like the Wounded Warriors Fund.
Also, Mabton post member Sabas Cantu was selected to be the state commander honor guard.
He is one of six department honor guards who will attend military funerals and perform the rights of a 21-gun salute, according to Piatt.
"They also participate in patriotic parades and activities when asked for any veteran," she said.
