Sharks regular season champs

The Sunnyside Sharks capped off an 11-1 season by sinking the visiting Othello Barracudas last night, 628-163.

No other team in the Mid-Valley Summer Swim League posted a better record during the regular season, giving the Sunnyside Rotary-sponsored swim club the 2011 regular season title.

However, the icing on the cake for the Sharks, the top prize, awaits. Sunnyside and the Selah Dolphins, who like the Sharks posted double-digit victories in league play, are expected to be the top contenders at this coming weekend's Mid-Valley Summer Swim League championship meet. The grand finale of the 2011 season will be hosted by the Toppenish Tarpons, who in all likelihood will be battling it out with Prosser for third and fourth place honors. The three remaining swim clubs - Grandview, Naches and Othello - will be in a dogfight for the fifth, sixth and seventh place finishing spots.

In last night's final dual meet of the season, the outcome was never in question. The Sharks dominated from start to finish, winning 62 of the 74 events that were staged in Sunnyside's Olympic-sized 50-meter pool.

Of the 12 wins the Barracudas collected, boys 18&U swimmer Ben Taff was in on seven of them. That was due in part, however, to the Sharks offering up only one swimmer in just one of the individual races to go against Taff. In that one race, the 50-meter freestyle, Taff clocked a time of 28.72 seconds, compared to the 33.11 clocking of Sunnyside's Nathan Gonzalez.

The one other standout for Othello was Kai Quigley, a boys 8&U competitor. Quigley was the victor in three of the four races in that age grouping. Sunnyside's Logan Rodriguez prevented Quigley from making it a clean sweep by taking top honors in the 50-meter butterfly. Rodriguez won the sprint in a time of 1:13.95. Quigley had to settle for runner-up honors with his clocking of 1:20.01.

The only other win garnered by the Barracudas in the individual events was claimed by boys 12&U swimmer Hunter Sparks. In the final event of the night, the 200-meter individual medley, he enjoyed a seven-second margin of victory over runner-up Adrian Heffron of Sunnyside.

The tightest race of the night Wednesday evening occurred in the boys 12&U, 50-meter breaststroke. The Sunnyside duo of Heffron and Mak Shergill battled Sparks to the very end, with none of the three conceding anything along the way. When the timers' final clockings were compared, the results showed Heffron and Shergill finishing one-two in times of 50.20 and 50.55, respectively. The Barracuda, Sparks, had to settle for the third-place finish with his clocking of 50.62 seconds.

Maybe the biggest surprise of the evening came in the 200-meter IM, where girls 16&U swimmer Brittany Broersma of Sunnyside has pretty much had her way all season long. Last night, though, it was teammate Madi Marquez prevailing in the endurance race, clocking a winning time of 2:56.49, approximately 6.3 seconds off the pool record for that age division, set back in 1997 by Tami Everts of Toppenish.
