SHS names top academic achievers in 2011 class

Sunnyside High School recently announced the top 5 percent of students in the graduating class of 2011, based on weighted grade point averages.

The list of 23 students is led by class valedictorian Christine Kim with a GPA of 4.432. The daughter of Fred and Helen Kim, she plans to attend Pepperdine University to major in international relations or biochemistry.

The class salutatorian is Blanca Mejia with a 4.368 GPA. The daughter of Jose and Bertha Mejia, she plans to attend the University of Washington and pursue a career in medicine.

Next is Humberto Mejia with a 4.355 GPA. The son of Jose and Bertha Mejia, he will attend the University of Washington and study engineering.

Marielle Abbott is graduating with a 4.27 GPA. The daughter of Scott and Felicia Abbott, she plans to attend WSU.

Ryan Rice is next with a 4.251 GPA. The son of Bob and Lucia Rice, he plans to attend the Academy of Arts University and major in motion pictures and television.

Melissa Chapina graduates SHS with a 4.220 GPA. The daughter of Angeles Moto and Gerardo Chapina, she plans to attend the University of Washington and puruse a medical degree.

Next is Kyle Scott with a 4.219 GPA. The son of Phil and Robin Scott, he plans to attend Columbia Basin College in Pasco to eventually pursue a career as a welder following a two-year service mission.

Juan Barajas posted a 4.203 GPA at SHS. The son of Juan and Veronica Barajas, he will study computer engineering and computer science at WSU.

Joyanna Bardell is next with a 4.199 GPA. The daughter of Ann and Tim Bardell, she plans to study nursing at the University of Washington.

Toni Marie Castillo leaves SHS with a 4.127 GPA. The daughter of Carolyn Hazzard and Antonio Castillo, she will attend Pacific Lutheran University and enroll in the pre-med program.

Ayla Marcelle Schmick posted a 4.118 GPA at SHS. The daughter of Julie and Tom Schmick, she will attend Pacific Lutheran University with a focus on pre-physical therapy.

Jill Spini graduates with a 4.113 GPA. The daughter of Julie and Mike Spini, she plans to attend Gonzaga University and major in international relations.

Jessie Robert is next with a 4.107 GPA. The daughter of Dave and Liz Robert, she will attend Eastern Washington University this fall.

Briana Cervantes Martinez has a 4.06 GPA. The daughter of Bertha and Jose Martinez, she will attend the University of Washington.

Emily Meyer graduates SHS with a 4.056 GPA. The daughter of Mark and Brenda Meyer, she will attend Western Washington University to double major in communication and business marketing.

Omar Vergara will leave SHS with a 4.036 GPA. The son of Salvador and Maria A. Vergara, he will attend the University of Washington and major either in psychology or law.

Next up is Joe Bonilla with a 3.979 GPA. The son of Jose and Maria Bonilla, he will attend the University of Washington to pursue an engineering degree while at the same time serving in the U.S. Marines.

Alfredo Gomez graduates with a 3.962 GPA. The son of Jorge Gomez and Diocelina Lepez, he will attend the University of Washington and major in electrical engineering.

Eva Alvarado posted a 3.929 GPA. The daughter of Lilia and Jose Alvarado, she will attend YVCC this summer and the University of Washington this fall.

Next is Jonathan Alan Gutierrez Acosta with a 3.928 GPA. The son of Juan and Consuelo Acosta, he will attend WSU and study computer engineering.

Sydney Wutzke finished with a 3.885 GPA. The daughter of Ben and Natalie Wutzke, she will attend Eastern Washington University to possibly major in exercise science.

Claudia Gonzalez will leave SHS with a 3.879 GPA. The daughter of Maria Valle, she will attend the University of Washington and major in architecture with hopes of studying abroad in Spain.

Rounding out Sunnyside High School's top 5 percent of academic standouts is Mayra Guizar with a 3.76 GPA. The daughter of Mario and Patricia Guizar, she will attend Western Washington University and study pre-med with a view towards working as a pediatrician.
