Single-car accident near Sunnyside results in five sent to local hospitals

The cause of an accident that sent five Lower Valley residents to the hospital yesterday, Wednesday, is under investigation by the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers reported that Angel M. Mendez, 20, of Sunnyside, was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan westbound on Bethany Road, when it left the roadway near Factory Road. The State Patrol says Mendez overcorrected and the vehicle left the roadway, rolling several times.

Mendez was transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital with injuries.

Four passengers in the vehicle were also injured. Karry Gurrola, 17 of Sunnyside was taken to Prosser Memorial Hospital, Isais Avalos, 21 of Sunnyside was transported to Kadlec Medical Center, Luis Lopez, 17, was taken to Sunnyside Community Hospital and Gabriella Chavez, 17, was taken to Prosser Memorial Hospital.

The State Patrol says the potential use of drugs or alcohol as a cause for the accident is being investigated, but charges and the cause of the accident are still under investigation.
