GRANDVIEW - Emilio Orozco, who will be a senior at Grandview High School this fall, has been named as Grandview's representative to the American Legion Evergreen Boys State convention at Central Washington University, June 19-26.
Orozco is sponsored by Grandview's Fred E. Hayes Post 57 of the American Legion.
Evergreen Boys State is a week-long experience in government, allowing the students to learn and practice the political and governing experience by actually functioning in various city, district and state positions, including legislative and judicial areas.
Young men from all over the state attend this annual event and take the learned skills back to their schools and communities to share and become better informed citizens.
During the week, they attend lectures and meet various elected officials and other leaders from throughout the state and nation.
Jim Davidson, Grandview's Boys State Chairman, notes, "Some are apprehensive when we drive them to the college. However, when we pick them up a week later, they are so enthusiastic about the experience it's all they talk about on the way home. They are also very tired."
The local American Legion Post tries to send at least one student per year, but can send more if funding can be found. The current scholarship fee paid by the Post is $275.
"We have sent as many as five students," said Davidson, "but we have trouble finding candidates via the schools."
Orozco was nominated by his Scoutmaster. He is a member of Troop 643 of Grandview.
