New street sweeper to be purchased

The City of Sunnyside will replace its 2006 Elgin Crosswind street sweeper with a Johnston VT 650 Vacuum sweeper at the cost of $141,656.

The Elgin was costing the city approximately $30,000 in annual repairs and trading it in at this time will maximize the trade-in value, according to Public Works Director Jim Bridges.

The winning bid for the new sweeper was submitted by SAHLBERG Equipment of Buckley. Bridges said the company cut its original estimate by nearly $20,000 to the $141,656 figure and the next best bid was $150,812 by Owen Equipment of Pendleton, Ore.

Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer Byron Olson and Bridges are working together to calculate how much of the expense will come from the stormwater fund and how much will come from the streets fund.

The Sunnyside City Council unanimously approved the purchase.
