This past Saturday the Sunnyside High School girls soccer team hosted a match against the SHS alumni.
The oldest among the alumni was class of 1994 graduate Angie Candido, and the youngest team member was Michelle Galvan of the SHS class of 2010.
The two teams battled back and forth through the opening half of the match.
The SHS team made seven attempts at scoring, but were held back by the alumni keeper.
The alumni opened scoring in the seventh minute. Unfortunately, the goal was off a corner kick and was inadvertently booted into the younger team's net.
The alumni battled back to score for themselves at the 26-minute mark.
Cassie Joliff of the alumni team gained possession of the ball and lobbed it to teammate Anna Alvarez for the goal.
The score was even, 1-1, and the two teams battled back and forth some more before Anna Lugo of SHS got the ball past the crossbars for another goal. The assist was from Yareli Gomez.
The alumni team wasn't deterred and about two minutes later equalized the match. Yanet Candido received an assist from Betsy Ledesma to tie the match 2-2.
The second half was another battle on the field.
Alumni player Sonia Saucedo shot the ball to the center of the penalty area from the far right side of the goal at the 55-minute mark. Teammate Yanet Candido gained possession and kicked the ball toward the goal. SHS keeper Liz Escobar was unable to stop the ball from making it past the crossbars. That was the alumni team's third and final goal of the game.
The younger team rallied and at the 61-minute mark Karla Osorio squared up for a shot from 20 yards out. She snapped it past the alumni keeper to teammate Anna Lugo, who tapped it in to equalize the match 3-3.
Victoria Munoz of the SHS squad collided with two alumni players at the 75-minute mark and was awarded a penalty kick opportunity.
Analisa Van Oostrum took the opportunity provided and scored to give the SHS team a 4-3 advantage.
With only two minutes left on the clock the Sunnyside High School team continued to press the alumni defense. Yarelly Gomez gained control of the ball, dribbled past the defense on the far right side of the field. She cut the ball across and scored in the left corner of the net.
"The alumni keeper had no way of getting to it," said SHS Coach Sylvia Villagrana.
The alumni was not able to overcome the deficit and the younger Sunnyside squad prevailed 5-3.
Villagrana said she was pleased with the turnout for the match, which was a fun way for the alumni players to get on the field and test their mettle against the younger girls.
The alumni, she believes, were worn out and suffered fatigue in the last 20 minutes of the match, "...which I'm pretty sure everyone would understand."
The two teams had what Villagrana believed were nice shots on both sides. She credited everyone who attended the event.
There were 19 alumni team members overall.
"Everyone had a lot of fun," Villagrana said.
