Sunnyside Sharks shred Barracudas, 416-218

OTHELLO - Other than the likes of Kai Quigley, Tatum Sparks and Ben Taff, the Sunnyside Sharks had an answer for each and every Barracuda that dove into the Othello pool last night.

The opening Mid-Valley Summer Swim League meet of the season was cut short due to inclement weather, but when the final tallies were added up, it was the perennially strong Sharks that surfaced with a dominating victory, 416-218.

Pool officials opted to cut Tuesday's meet short, scratching both the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley events because temperatures had dropped to the mid-50's.

Othello, just entering its third season as a member of the Mid-Valley Summer Swim League, showed promise last night. Three of the Barracudas, especially, distinguished themselves as potential threats to all the league heavyweights.

The one Othello swimmer who especially stood out was Quigley. He claimed wins in all four of the boys 8&U, 25-yard races. His greatest margins of victory came in the freestyle and backstroke events, winning by 6.91 and 5.01 seconds, respectively, against the next closest finishers.

Sparks also had a good night for Othello, winning three of the girls 14&U, 50-yard races. Sunnyside's Lindsay Schilperoort prevented Sparks from making it a clean sweep, however, as Schilperoort sped to a clocking of 38.35 seconds in the backstroke for the win. Sparks (39.40) was third in the race behind Schilperoort and runner-up Carly Taff of Othello (38.44).

The Barracudas' Ben Taff was the only other multi-race winner for Othello. He picked up a pair of victories in the boys 18&U, 50-yard butterfly and freestyle events.

Five other Barracudas walked away with one win apiece, but the night clearly belonged to the Sunnyside team. All told, the Sharks were victorious in 39 of the 55 events staged last night.

One of the Sharks who turned in an impressive outing was girls 10&U competitor Ashlee Maldonado. She cut through the competition in all four of the races in her age division like a sharp knife through warm butter.

Maldonado's top performance came in the 50-yard butterfly. She toured two lengths of the 25-yard pool in 39.07 seconds, more than eight and a half seconds quicker than the next closest finisher, Othello's Shaya Parrish.

Sunnyside's Marisa Broersma also enjoyed a spectacular splash to the start of the 2011 summer season. A girls 18&U swimmer, she was never remotely challenged in any of the four races in which she competed. Her margins of victory ranged from 8.4 seconds in the 50-free to as much as 12.6 seconds in the 50-breast.

Teammate Giovanni Rodriguez, too, was untouchable as far as the Barracudas were concerned. Rodriguez made off with wins in all four of the boys 16&U races. Like Broersma, Rodriguez finished far ahead of all his challengers.

The race of the night Tuesday evening, in terms of photo finishes, turned out to be the girls 10&U, 50-yard backstroke. The top four finishers, all Sharks, hit the wall within six-tenths of a second of one another. The order of finish was Maldonado (50.03), Jessica Scheenstra (50.53), Kylah Bunch (50.56) and Gentri Gray (50.65).

Sunnyside has a bye this coming Thursday, but returns to action next Tuesday at home against the Grandview Neptunes.
