Info meeting set for National Night Out

The Sunnyside Police Department will host a meeting next Wednesday, June 29, for those who would like to host a block party during the National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The June 29 meeting will be held at 5 p.m. at the Law and Justice Center.

The goal of the block parties is to eventually form neighborhood block watch groups.

The Sunnyside Police Department hopes to assist more than 20 neighborhoods in throwing their own block parties in 2011 and continuing its long standing relationship and participation in the National Night Out against crime.

The Sunnyside Police Department's mission in associating itself with the National Association of Town Watch is to accomplish four broad goals:

1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;

2. Generate support for and participation in, local anticrime programs;

3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships;

4. Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
