GRANDVIEW - Connie Gonzalez and her parents, Alice and Daniel Lopez Jr., last Friday opened Grandview's newest restaurant, Connie's Restaurant.
The location of the restaurant on the corner of West Second Street and Grandridge Road isn't new and the concept, said Gonzalez, is also familiar to many.
She said her family wanted to provide a place for community members to gather. "Many remember hanging out after games at Morrie's Pizza, but there isn't a place for getting together following a game anymore," said Gonzalez.
With the idea of providing a community gathering place, she has designed a menu that is often associated with uniting groups.
On the menu are hot sandwiches, fresh tacos with tortillas made from scratch, hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, a full salad bar, nachos, chicken and jo-jos. Gonzalez is also offering homemade salsa.
The hot sandwiches, she said, will include reubens, roast beef, turkey, ham, pastrami and grilled cheese. The hamburgers, she said, will never be made from frozen meat. There will also be daily specials.
"There hasn't been a place for community members to gather and visit since Morrie's burned down," said Gonzalez, a Grandview native who grew up with a common meeting place to commune with others.
She said she and her father are also mulling ideas for team specials to be offered to athletes stopping in after games.
"We want this to be a place where customers can eat after 10 p.m. We want them to be able to come in, sit down and visit with one another, so we are open later," Gonzalez said.
Connie's Restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Fridays and Saturdays the eatery is open until midnight.
Gonzalez said owning a restaurant "is something my dad has always wanted...it's been his dream."
The name of the restaurant was also her father's idea. "He always said he was going to name a restaurant after me," said Gonzalez.
"It is our hope that we will be able to meet the community's needs," she said.
