I'm writing to you to let you know that the Sunnyside Community Center and Sunnyside's Promise are incredibly important to this community.
Sunnyside's Promise has been managing the community center since April 2010, between April and December 9,825 individuals enjoyed their programming. I've been working at the community center for three months now and have seen so many great kids come and love being here.
We have a gang problem here in Sunnyside; a primary goal of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's anti-gang initiative is to support community efforts to provide young people with safe and pro-social environments in which to live and grow. Sunnyside's Promise is working hard to provide the youth of Sunnyside with that and more; safe spaces, caring adults, effective education, healthy start and opportunities to help others.
The community center is the only place in Sunnyside open for kids to go after school. If they did not come here, what would they be doing with their free time? Kids of all ages come to hang out, play basketball or soccer, do arts and crafts and simply have a good time, it is so much better to have youth spending time at the community center rather than on the streets causing trouble or getting bullied.
The government and citizens of Sunnyside need to support Sunnyside's Promise and the community center.
Remember, everyone deserves a safe place to be a kid.
