It may still feel like winter, nonetheless the spring prep golf season is underway.
The high school golf teams from Prosser, Grandview and Sunnyside invaded Black Rock Creek Golf Course yesterday for the 2011 kick-off event.
On the boys side, senior Chad Hancock fired a 2-over-par 38 to lead Prosser to the low team score, a 169. He ended up with medalist honors Tuesday afternoon.
Yesterday's nine-hole match was staged on the front nine of the Sunnyside-area course.
Rounding out the Prosser boys team score were Devin Bender with a 40, Marcus Smith with a 44 and Wade French with a 47.
The Sunnyside linksters tallied a 189 to finish second yesterday in the boys scoring. Leading the Grizzly charge was Nathan Espinoza with an 8-over-par 44. Three shots back, with identical 47's, were teammates Chandler Luther and Nathan Meyer. Ryan Hernandez rounded out the Sunnyside boys team scoring with a 51.
The hosts of yesterday's 2011 spring kick-off event, the Grandview Greyhounds, brought up the rear in the boys team scoring. The 'Hounds totaled a 265.
The low scorer for Grandview was newcomer Matthew Dailey, only a freshman. He toured the front nine at Black Rock Creek with a 55.
"He's a big kid, very strong," said Grandview Coach Dave Uggetti. "Once he finds his rhythm, basically slows his swing down, and gets his short game working, he'll be OK," said Uggetti.
Besides the 55 posted by Dailey, Grandview got rounds of 63 and 64 from Dylan Parker and Justin Murback, respectively, as well as an 83 from Sean Charvet.
In the girls competition yesterday, Sunnyside's Renae Visser earned medalist honors. She carded a 7-over-par 43. Visser is the lone golfer on this year's Lady Grizzly golf team.
Grandview had three girls out for yesterday's match. Second-year golfer Kayla Lucas posted the best individual round from among the trio. She parred two of the nine holes enroute to scoring a 55. Grandview's Taylor McKinney shot a 63 and teammate Natasha Lara added a 73.
The one girl representing Prosser Tuesday afternoon was Alex Riojas. She finished the nine holes of play with a 51.
The Grandview girls team is scheduled to play at the Hanford invite this coming Friday at Horn Rapids Golf Course. The GHS boys squad will host the Ephrata Tigers at Black Rock Creek Golf Course this coming Friday for a non-league match.
Sunnyside's boys are scheduled to play in the Kennewick invite at the Tri-City Country Club this coming Friday.
