Public hearing to consider zoning regulations for adult entertainment facilities

YAKIMA - With Yakima County facing the possibility of adult entertainment facilities in the future, such as an adult nightclub or other establishment, the Yakima County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, March 16, at the Yakima Convention Center to gather public input about the county's proposed zoning regulations in areas of the county outside of cities and towns.

The proposed amendments to the Yakima County Zoning Ordinance and the Yakima Urban Area Zoning Ordinance would provide requirements for establishing adult entertainment facilities within specified zoning districts. The changes would specify what types of adult entertainment facilities would be allowed in these locations, what separation distances and zoning review procedures are required, and outline other requirements.

The open record public hearing begins at 7 p.m. at 10 N. 8th Street in Yakima. The hearing is organized and hosted by staff from the Yakima County Public Services Department.

An informational open house will precede the hearing beginning at 6 p.m. at the Convention Center. The hearing will be called to order at 7 p.m. by Planning Commission Chairman Ed Burns.

Last June the Board of Yakima County Commissioners enacted a moratorium on new adult entertainment establishments in unincorporated areas to evaluate the county's needs and to develop regulations to ensure that such potential establishments are permitted only in appropriate locations. The proposed regulations will become law if they are adopted by the board. The board must hold its own hearing at a later date to consider the recommendation of the Yakima County Planning Commission.
