16-year-old girl struck by gunfire while in her bed

A 16-year-old girl was early this morning (Monday) struck by two bullets in the back while lying in bed.

Sunnyside police responded at 12:43 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Tacoma Avenue. Officers arrived on the scene to discover multiple shots were fired from what was believed to be an assault rifle. The shooter was believed to have been shooting from an alleyway near the home in which the teen was struck.

A dark colored foreign-made vehicle is suspected as the vehicle in which the suspect fled the scene.

The teenaged victim, according to police, is being treated at the local hospital. An update on her condition is expected later this afternoon.

Shortly after the reported shooting, officers were alerted to another shots fired call in the 700 block of Bagley Drive.

Multiple shots were fired at a residence from a similar high-powered assault rifle used in the Tacoma Avenue shooting, according to police. The home on Bagley Drive was discovered to have been struck multiple times, but no injuries were reported in that incident.

Sunnyside police were assisted by officers from the Grandview Police Department, the Washington State Patrol and the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.

The shootings are believed to be connected and the case is believed to be gang-related.

The case is still under investigation and anyone with information regarding the shootings is urged to call the Sunnyside Police Department at 836-6200.
