Lady Knights split with Naches Valley

NACHES - The Sunnyside Christian High School softball team played a doubleheader against Naches Valley last Friday and ended up with a split, losing the first game but coming back and winning the nightcap.

The Lady Knights lost the first game 4-2. Makayla Morrow pitched for SCHS and threw six innings, giving up three hits, walking one batter, hitting another and striking out nine.

The Rangers got one run in the first inning, but SCHS came back in the top of the second to score two runs.

Sunnyside Christian Coach Sandy Harris said the inning started with Danika DeGroot getting hit by a pitch. She then moved to second base on a passed ball. Morrow then came up and singled, which moved DeGroot to third base. Janelle DeGroot then came up and hit into a fielder's choice, which brought home Danika DeGroot.

Emily Bangs then came up and was walked. Bangs then stole second and Gabby Fillicetti laid down a bunt that brought home Morrow.

The Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning and went ahead with two runs in the fifth.

Both teams had three hits, but what affected SCHS were the five errors the Knights committed.

Morrow was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Grace den Hoed got the other hit for SCHS, going 1-for-3.

Harris said her infield has all new players and it's going to take a while for the players to get used to the new positions.

The Lady Knights bounced back in the second game, winning 7-3. This game only went six innings because of darkness.

"We cut the errors," said Harris. "We still got some work to do but we'll get it.

"We settled down," she added. "A couple of the girls took that extra second to throw the ball and we hit a little bit better."

The Knights pounded out seven hits in the nightcap.

Both teams scored one run apiece in the opening inning. The Knights scored four runs in the top of the third, but the Rangers got one back in the bottom half of the inning. Both team scored a run in the fifth and SCHS added one more in the top of the sixth.

Morrow pitched four innings of the nightcap, allowing four hits, two walks and striking out one player. Janelle DeGroot came on in relief in the fifth inning. She pitched two innings and gave up one hit.

Morrow led the Lady Knights in the nightcap by going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Analisa VanOostrum was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. den Hoed was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Janelle DeGroot went 1-for-3, as did Devi Knotts. Danika DeGroot went hitless in the second game but did get two RBIs on a sacrifice bunt and a walk.

Sunnyside Christian will begin its league schedule tonight (Tuesday) when the Lady Knights hosts Klickitat in a doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.
