Behind the devastating pitching of Makayla Morrow the Sunnyside Christian Knights roughed up the Klickitat Vandals in Greater Columbia 1B play yesterday (Tuesday).
Sunnyside Christian beat the Vandals 11-0 and 11-1 in the doubleheader to begin its league season 2-0.
Morrow pitched a no-hitter in the opening match-up, tossing six scoreless innings. The only thing marring a perfect game for Morrow were two errors committed by the Lady Knights.
"Makayla pitched a great game," said SCHS Coach Sandy Harris. "The defense played great behind her."
Morrow mowed down 13 batters in game one and walked one. Her counterpart for the Vandals did her part as well, throwing 10 strikeouts but walking eight SCHS players.
The Lady Knights scored one run in the first inning and then put up four more in the second on just two hits. Grace den Hoed doubled and Danika DeGroot hit a two RBI single, scoring Devi Knotts and den Hoed. Sunnyside Christian got help in the inning courtesy of a walk and one error committed by Klickitat.
Sunnyside Christian forced the 10-run mercy rule in the sixth inning when the Knights scored five runs.
Both Gabby Fillicetti and Knotts walked to get on base and Jenna den Hoed, Analisa VanOostrum, and Grace den Hoed all singled and Morrow had a two RBI double.
Harris pointed out the play of VanOostrum and Knotts. Knotts, she said, only had one hit, an RBI single in the first inning, but scored on a passed ball when she was walked and also hustled to first base when the Klickitat catcher dropped a called third strike.
VanOostrum went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in game one. Grace den Hoed was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Knotts was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Morrow was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. DeGroot was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Fillicetti was 1-for-1 with one run scored. Jenna den Hoed was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the second game of yesterday's doubleheader Morrow pitched the first three innings for the Lady Knights, holding the Vandals hitless and scoreless. She also threw six strikeouts in the three innings of work.
Janelle DeGroot came on in relief to start the fourth inning and gave up two hits and threw one strikeout in two innings of work.
Klickitat started the same pitcher as they did in game one and she threw 10 Ks, but tossed 11 walks and hit one Sunnyside Christian batter.
The Lady Knights scored one run in the first and then tacked on four more in the second.
The Klickitat pitcher started this inning by walking Janelle DeGroot, Emily Bangs and Fillicetti. Both DeGroot and Bangs scored on passed balls, but Fillicetti was brought home by a Knotts' triple. She then scored herself on a passed ball.
The Knights added three runs apiece in both the fourth and fifth innings before forcing the 10-run mercy rule.
In the fourth inning VanOostrum and Danika DeGroot reached base on walks. Knotts reached base when she was hit by a pitch. All three eventually scored on passed balls.
In the fifth inning Knotts, and Janelle DeGroot got singles and Danika DeGroot doubled to go along with two more walks.
VanOostrum was `1-for-2 in the nightcap with three runs scored. Knotts was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Grace den Hoed was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Morrow was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Danika DeGroot was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Janelle DeGroot was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Knights (3-2) will host Kittitas tomorrow (Thursday) at 4 p.m. in a non-league matchup. The game is a make-up from March 15.
