COWICHE - The Highland Scotties beat the Mabton High School soccer team for the second time this season in a SCAC match-up yesterday (Tuesday).
Highland survived a 2-1 match, but will have to turn around and host the Vikings on Saturday, May 7, when Mabton comes back to town for a loser-out first round District playoff match.
Both teams couldn't score in the first half of play. It took 11 minutes of the second half before Highland got on the board.
Miguel Muniz sent a long kick from 20 yards out towards Mabton's goal. Keeper Damien Diaz tried to reach for the shot but the ball went over his head and into the goal.
"It was a pretty nice goal," said Mabton Coach Junior Garcia.
In the 70th minute of play, Highland's Juan Salcedo was able to score again when a shot deflected off Diaz and rolled into the goal.
Down 2-0, the Vikings fought back with a goal in the 75th minute of play to make things interesting. Tony Espinosa sent a crossing pass to Crisantos Chavez that went over the heads of two Highland defenders. Chavez was able to control it and gave the ball a nice little flick when the Highland keeper came out to defend.
Diaz had six saves for the Vikings. Antonio Gonzalez recorded four saves for the Scotties.
The loss drops Mabton's SCAC league record to 5-9, 7-9 overall.
