A 61-year-old rural Lower Valley man was stabbed to death shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday (Sunday) over what the Yakima County Sheriff's Office says might have been an ongoing dispute over money.
The Sheriff's office said Pedro Florez was found lying in the driveway of a residence located in the 3000 block of Grandview Pavement Road, just north of Mabton and west of Grandview. Florez was treated at the scene and then transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Witnesses at the scene provided suspect information to deputies and that information was relayed to other agencies.
Yakima County Chief of Detectives Stewart Graham said the Benton County Sheriff's Office detained the suspect at his home in rural Benton County. Graham said the 57-year-old suspect lives between Prosser and Benton City.
The suspect had injuries police believe were caused during the incident with Florez and the suspect was taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, where he was treated for his injuries and released. He was then taken to the Yakima County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of first degree murder. The suspect will make a preliminary court appearance today (Monday).
