Local cowboys, cowgirls will saddle up to battle cancer

A good time for a good cause is planned for the weekend of July 16-17 during an event called Sort-4-The-Cause.

The horseback riding event will be held both days, Saturday and Sunday, at Sunnyside's Speck's Arena at 1504 Saul Road.

Shellie Speck is one of the event organizers and she said half of the $50 registration fee for each participant will go directly to Yakima Valley agencies that work with cancer patients, like Northstar and Children's Wishes & Dreams.

Participants can win back the other half of their registration fee if they and their partner can ride on horseback and move (sort) cattle in order from one pen to another.

There are multiple classifications of competition in the timed event, Speck said, so all riders are welcome. She said there will be one payout per 15 entries in the sort and a buckle awarded to the high-point team in each classification.

The person who raises the most money for the cancer cause will also receive a buckle. All funds raised must be collected and presented at or before the event.

The Sort-4-The-Cause begins at 9 a.m. both days and food will be available for purchase on site.

A special treat on Saturday, July 16, will be a charity event called a Celebrity Draw Calcutta Class. Speck said this classification consists of Yakima Valley "celebrities" such as Rep. David Taylor, as well as representatives from well-known organizations such as city and hospital employees and even a State Patrol representative.

"They might know something about horseback riding, but it will be entertaining to see them sort cattle on horseback," Speck said of the celebrities.

She said there is no cost to the celebrity entrants to register for the event.

Part of the celebrity portion of the sort event includes an auction to bid on which celebrities will come out on top. Speck said whoever picks the winning celebrity will receive a cash prize.

A silent auction will also be held throughout the sort event to help raise funds for the cause.
