EPHRATA - Three long days and rain delays could not hold back Grandview's Ryan Rodriguez, who walked away from the CWAC District tennis competition with a championship.
Rodriguez had a bye in last Friday's first round and defeated Luis Delgado from Wapato 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the third round, however, a 3 1/2 hour rain delay pushed the boys singles matches to Monday.
Despite another rain delay on Monday, Rodriguez returned to face three more competitors, defeating Kevin Munck from Prosser (6-1, 6-1), then Thomas Pheasant (6-2, 6-3), to earn him a spot in the championship match.
Competing against Rodriguez in the final match was Michael Bosnar from Ephrata. In the first round of matches, Bosnar had defeated and eliminated Rodriguez's Grandview teammate, Ezequiel Zamora (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) from the competition.
Rodriguez exacted some Greyhound revenge and defeated Bosnar 6-2, 6-2 for the championship.
Rodriguez moves onto Regionals in Pullman this coming Saturday as the #1 seed for the CWAC. He will face Pheasant, the #5 seed. If Rodriguez defeats Pheasant, he is guaranteed a spot to State.
The rest of the Greyhounds put up a fair fight, but all fell to their opponents, with no one advancing beyond the quarter finals.
The doubles team of Angel Lopez and Stevan Ramirez defeated their first round opponents, Joe Godina and Kenny Blehm from Selah (6-1, 6-3) to move onto the second round.
Ellensburg's Aaron Greear and Erik Hurson faced Lopez and Ramirez in the second round. The Grandview boys defeated them 6-3, 6-1.
In the quarter finals, the doubles team of Hunter Sears and Conner Sears from Ephrata proved to be Lopez and Ramirez's undoing. They defeated the Grandview team with a 6-2, 6-4 score and managed to claim the #2 seed to Regionals.
Austin Wilson and John Olsen of East Valley claimed the District boys doubles championship.
Lopez and Ramirez went on to lose in the first consolation round to Ellensburg's Nick Gigstead and Jeremy Teske, who went on to earn the #5 seed to Regionals.
Meanwhile, Grandview's Abel Pasillas and Brock Jetke lost in the second round to Olsen and Wilson (6-1, 6-3). Teammates Ivan Campuzano and Marcus Morales lost in the first round to Wapato's Miguel Mandac and Gerardo Valencia (6-2, 6-1).
In the girls singles District matches, Jessica Hernandez defeated her first opponent, Teresa Connolly from Ellensburg (6-3, 6-4). Ashley Bond from Selah ousted Hernandez in the second round of play with a 6-0, 6-2 score.
Ana Herrera lost her first match and was eliminated from the competition by Megan Schrenk from Selah (6-0, 6-1).
Schrenk moved on to face Abigail Pellett of Ellensburg, who defeated Schrenk and eventually claimed the District championship.
Mayra Escareno and CaSandra Hudon were Grandview's only girls doubles team to advance beyond the first round.
They defeated Toppenish's Susana Cruz and Beatriz Garciana (6-2, 6-1) to move onto the second round. There they faced Ali Gray and Jax Chrissus of Ellensburg. Gray and Chrissus defeated the Grandview team 6-4, 6-1.
Grey and Chissus were knocked out of the competition by Othello's Emma Hymus and Jocelyn Cantu, who moved on to claim the District girls doubles championship.
Fellow Grandview girls doubles teams, Sadie Wyatt and Victoria Chambers, and Karissa Carpenter and Gabby Avalos, were defeated in the first round.
Wyatt and Chambers lost to Othello's Amelia Roylance and Yanitta Cantu (6-1, 6-3).
Chambers and Avalos lost to Toppenish's Andrea Padilla and Araceli Aguilera (6-1, 6-0).
