Drive-by shooting believed to be gang-related

Just before 6:30 p.m. last night (Wednesday) Sunnyside police responded to a shots fired call in the 1300 block of North Avenue. Officers investigating the call found an apartment in the area was the target of the shooting and several shots struck the building.

There were residents inside the apartment complex, but no one was reported injured.

Witnesses, say police, directed officers toward a suspect vehicle that had left the roadway a short distance from the shooting.

Officers shortly afterward detained a 21-year-old female, who is believed to have been driving the vehicle.

Responding to assist with the incident were officers from Mabton, the Washington State Patrol, Yakima County Sheriff's Office and Prosser Police Department.

Sunnyside Police Department Public Information Officer Charlotte Hinderlider said a search of the area surrounding the scene was conducted. Officers were seeking to find other occupants of the suspect vehicle.

A weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was located, but no additional suspects were found.

Hinderlider said the investigation is ongoing and more information is expected to be obtained.

The incident is believed to be gang-related and a search of the suspect vehicle is expected to be conducted later.

Hinderlider also noted an investigation into the residence targeted is being pursued and the Sunnyside Police Department is pursuing enforcement options pertaining to the crime-free rental housing ordinance.

Anyone with further information regarding the incident is urged to call the Sunnyside Police Department at 836-6200.
