After 36 weeks of play, James Morrow of Sunnyside needed a strong showing in the final competition of the year to capture the 2011 Lower Yakima Valley Grassroots Cribbage season championship.
Morrow concluded the year with 241 points, edging out Betty Stewart by just nine points for the 2011 title. Darin Truax finished third in the Silver Dollar Cribbage Club standings, and the club's 2010 champion, Bob Brumley, placed fourth.
As the 2011 club champion, Morrow will receive an invitation to compete in the Grassroots Tournament of Champions, being held in conjunction with the Grand National Cribbage Tournament in Reno, Nev. this coming September.
Enroute to winning top honors this year in local club play, Morrow scored two grand slams during the season (winning all nine games in a night). He also reached a milestone by accumulating 2,500 lifetime points, only the second Lower Valley club member to have earned Silver Award status. Jack Moritzky of Mabton achieved that feat earlier in the 2011 season.
Brumley, a Sunnyside resident, achieved Bronze Award status by topping the 1,000 point mark this season.
The Silver Dollar Cribbage Club will continue to meet for summer play each Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Sunnyside VFW. The 2012 grassroots season will commence this coming September, marking the club's 20th year in existence.
