Sunnyside VFW invites community residents to take part in annual Memorial Day services

Sunnyside residents will honor the memory of those who died in service to their country along with the rest of America on Monday, May 30.

Beforehand, though, in observance of Memorial Day, local residents are invited to Lower Valley Memorial Gardens to place flags on the graves of veterans who have died, on Saturday, May 28, at 6 a.m.

There will be a free breakfast served by the Sunnyside VFW Ladies Auxiliary following the placing of the flags. The breakfast will be served at the Sunnyside VFW, located at 615 North Ave.

Memorial Day will begin with a memorial service at the Outlook Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.

At 11 a.m., another memorial service will be held at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens on Van Belle Road.

Both services will include laying wreaths by each participating veterans organization, the reading of veterans names that have passed on in the past year, and speeches from local dignitaries, along with a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.

Sunnyside Mayor Jim Restucci will be the featured speaker at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.

At 6 p.m. on Memorial Day, volunteers will meet at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens to retrieve the flags.

All veterans, families and friends are invited to participate.
