PULLMAN - Grandview's Ryan Rodriguez entered the Regional CWAC tennis tournament as a District champion and surrounded by family and friends ready to cheer him on.
The 2011 Regional 2A Tennis Tournament was held at WSU in Pullman last Saturday. It was long day for Rodriguez, who faced down three competitors, but pulled out the one important win he needed that day.
As District champion, Rodriguez's first match was a crucial one, said Grandview Coach Ronda Penwell. "If he won his first match, he would be guaranteed a spot to State."
That first match was against Alex Schnebly from Ellensburg. Schnebly and Rodriguez went head-to-head in a very close match.
Schnebly came out fighting, claiming a 6-4 win in the first set to put him one set away from a win.
Rodriguez battled back in a very close second set that was pushed into a tie breaker (7-0). Rodriquez won the set with a 7-6 score.
He went on to shut out Schnebly in the third set, 6-0.
Rodriguez moved on to his next opponent, David Denenny from Cheney.
Denenny defeated Rodriguez 6-2, 6-3.
Rodriguez moved on to compete for third and fourth place honors at the tournament. He went up against Jorge Rey Montejo from Deer Park.
It was another close three-set match for Rodriguez. Montejo claimed the first set 6-2, but Rodriguez battled back to pull out his own 6-2 set win in the second.
The third set came down to a very close 6-4 finish that gave Montejo the win.
Rodriguez will move into the State competition as the region's #4 seed. The tournament will be held at the University of Washington this weekend.
