My wife and I are in Orange City, Iowa as I write this. Noticing Margaret Nelson's recent letter to the editor about incorporating a Dutch theme into Sunnyside's Sunshine Days celebration made me respond, (thanks Margaret).
This past weekend we just experienced the "Dutch Tulip Festival" in this quaint little Dutch town of about 4,000 population. However, thousands of people from all over lined the streets from Thursday through Saturday.
There were street dances by kindergartners to adults wearing wooden shoes, street scrubbing by young and old, high school marching bands walking on wooden shoes, floats of all sorts with Dutch themes like windmills, etc., and a little boy holding his finger in the dike, as well as tulips of all sorts. Lots of Dutch foods, too, including "poffertjes" (miniature pancakes dipped in rum butter spinkled with powdered sugar)
.And I could go on and on, we just had a fantastic time.
