Grandview plans business workshops

GRANDVIEW - A series of seminars on topics ranging from software to team building will be held at YVCC's Grandview campus over the next several months.

Known as "Bettering Your Business Workshops,"

the 2011-12 series is in partnership with Yakima Valley Community College, Grandview, Sunnyside, and Prosser chambers of commerce, State Farm and Foster School of Business at University of Washington.

The next workshop on the horizon is on team building and will be held Monday, Nov. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the conference room of the Grandview/YVCC library.

This seminar teaches business owners how to recognize different team dynamics and the importance of creating well-designed teams which can lead to an overall increase in company performance and team stability.

The seminar series then moves to the new year of 2012, when a workshop on employee performance will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 1-4 p.m. in the library conference room.

The class will teach the basic steps of establishing clear performance expectations, assess professional development needs, evaluate employee performance, develop improvement plans and coach employees to help them improve.

A month later, the series will feature a two-part series on Microsoft Word. The first part will be on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Room L123 on the Grandview campus.

Part two will continue on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 5 p.m., also in Room L123.

The first part of the Word series will focus on formatting documents, working with multiple documents, inserting pictures and graphics, creating headers and footers and more.

Part two of Microsoft Word will cover intermediate skills with the software, building on the material taught in part one. Topics will include working with drawing tools, changing styles, formatting, conducting a mail merge and building a table of contents.

The workshop series then spends two seminars on Microsoft Excel. Part one is Wednesday, March 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Room L123. This hands-on introductory workshop will introduce students to Excel worksheet structure, teach about creating formulas, how to format and sort data and much more. No previous experience with Excel is necessary.

Microsoft Excel, part two is Wednesday, March 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Room L123.

This intermediate workshop is for those who have used Excel, but don't feel they are utilizing it to its full capabilities.

Participants will build on what was covered in the introductory workshop, create lists and charts, work with functions, add themes, subtotal data and more.

The workshop series then turns its attention to business strategy with a long-term marketing class on Friday, April 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Grandview/YVCC library conference room.

Those attending this workshop will learn the basics of creating a marketing plan for their businesses.

This interactive class will cover the key marketing components of the plan, including a SWOT analysis, effective marketing segmentation, targeting and positioning strategies, the marketing mix (4 P's) and creating a marketing program.

All workshops cost $65 each for the general public, though a $20 discount is available for those who take two classes.

Workshops are $15 each for chamber of commerce members.
