Ruth Mabel Trautman 75, of Sunnyside passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at her home in Sunnyside.

Ruth was born Jan. 22, 1935 in Grants Pass, Ore. to Wilson and Ellen (Peterson) Barber. She received her early education in Eugene Ore. and later earned her teaching degree from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho.

Ruth and her two children, Rich and Debbie moved to the Lower Yakima Valley in the early 1970.

Ruth was an elementary teacher for more than 30 years, mostly in Grandview.

Ruth's passion was always teaching, helping children get a good start with lots of love, a thirst for learning and being the best you could be. To the end she taught, tutored, and coached.

She especially loved the ocean, the mountains and picking huckleberries in the fall.

Ruth also cherished time with family and friends.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Debbie Metheny of Sunnyside; a son, Rich Leggett of Issaquah; one brother, Paul Barber; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dave Trautman; two sisters, Sandy and Margaret; and one brother, Wilson.

At the family's request there will be no formal services.

Smith Funeral Home Ltd. and Crematory in Sunnyside is in charge of arrangements.
