SHS keglers off to 2-1 start

Senior Rosa Garza bowled the top two-game series on the afternoon yesterday, leading the Sunnyside Lady Grizzlies to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Pasco Bulldogs.

Tuesday's win at Sunnyside's Valley Lanes improved the Lady Grizzly bowling team's record to 2-1 on the young 2011-12 season.

Sunnyside tallied victories in the first two total pinfall contests yesterday.

In the opening game, sophomore Johanna Chumley rolled a 169 and Garza was on her heels with a 163 to lead the Lady Grizzlies to a 727-690 win. Rounding out the first-game individual scores for Sunnyside were efforts of 139, 131 and 125 from YaYa Gonzalez, Veronica Alvarez and Amanda Villarreal, respectively.

Pasco's top performance in the opening game was a 176, that notched by junior Mariko Sital.

Sunnyside made it two straight wins over Pasco by claiming a 687-643 decision in game two. Garza was the leader for the Lady Grizzlies, rolling a team-best 165. Sunnyside also got performances of 144 and 135 from Villarreal and Gonzalez, respectively, as well as efforts of 128 from Alvarez and 115 from Chumley.

The Lady Grizzlies clinched Tuesday's team victory by winning the first of the two Baker games, 164-131. In the Baker bowling format, each member of the five-girl squad alternates taking shots throughout the 10-frame match.

Pasco averted getting swept by winning the second Baker game, 131-110.

In JV action yesterday the match ended up tied at 2-2. The victory went Pasco's way, however, as the junior varsity Bulldogs had a greater total pinfall in the four contests, 1104-1042. Maria Casas had the top two-game series for Sunnyside in the JV match on efforts of 107-84.

The SHS bowling team will next compete this coming Thursday at Sunnyside's Valley Lanes against the visiting West Valley Rams.
