Thanksgiving Day Turkey trot to benefit Sunnyside food banks

Sunnyside High School senior Eric Espindola has organized the first-ever Turkey Trot 5K race for this Thursday, Nov. 24, as his senior project.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Sunnyside food banks.

Participants can register for the event at the cost of $10 or $5 with a canned or non-perishable food item.

Registration at the high school parking lot begins at 6 a.m. on race day, and the race begins at 6:30 p.m.

Participants will travel East Edison Avenue to South 16th Street. The course continues to East Lincoln Avenue and east to the Lower Valley Pathway. Runners, walkers and joggers will traverse the pathway back to East Edison Avenue. The course will continue behind the high school, Harrison Middle School and Chief Kamiakin Elementary School to East Lincoln Avenue. From there, participants will "trot" back to South 16th and north to the Sunnyside High School track.

The first three participants to cross the finish line will receive a free turkey and other prizes will also be awarded.

Guerra's Coffee Company will provide donuts and coffee at the end of the race.
