FEDERAL WAY - Considering only about a half-dozen girls comprise the Sunnyside High School swim team this fall, the Lady Grizzlies' 25th place finish at last Saturday's Mukilteo Invitational wasn't all that shabby of an effort.
A total of 37 schools were represented at the girls swim meet. The 4A Richland Bombers and 3A Hanford Falcons tied for top team honors with 438 points apiece. Sunnyside and Prosser shared 25th place honors with 46 points each.
The top finishes recorded by Sunnyside at the Federal Way meet were a pair of 15th place showings.
The first came in the 200-yard medley relay, which drew a field of 78 squads. The Lady Grizzly foursome of Lindsay Schilperoort, Cassadie Moore, Marisa Broersma and Payton Sample covered the four lengths of the pool in a time of 2:05.80. The four Sunnyside swimmers would have needed to shave 4.75 seconds off their time to earn a 'Top 10' finish. The winning clocking was 1:55.71, set by a foursome from Snohomish High School.
The other 15th place showing for the Lady Grizzlies was earned by the senior Broersma. Competing in the 100-yard breaststroke she clocked a time of 1:13.84, two and a half seconds shy of a 'Top 10' finish. The winner of the race, in a time of 1:09.04, was Moses Lake's Courtney Schwiesow.
Sunnyside had two other swimmers competing in the 100-breaststroke, which drew 90 swimmers. Freshman Cassadie Moore posted a time of 1:16.17, good for 20th place honors, and Lady Grizzly teammate Kalie Bestebreur, also a freshman, finished in 63rd place (1:24.66).
Broersma, from a field of 77 swimmers, also managed a 26th place finish in the 200-yard individual medley. She swam to a clocking of 2:23.06. The winning time was 2:05.87, set by Richland's Lisa Bratton.
Sunnyside, too, had a fairly decent showing in the 200-yard freestyle relay. From a field that drew 84 squads, the Lady Grizzly foursome of Broersma, Moore, Bestebreur and Sample turned in the 21st fastest time. Their clocking was 1:54.40. The Union team placed first with a clocking of 1:43.72.
Sample, a freshman, added a 32nd place finish for Sunnyside, competing in the 50-yard freestyle. She sprinted the length of the pool in 28.51 seconds. The event drew 191 swimmers. Wenatchee sophomore Hannah Bruggman had the winning time of 24.51 seconds.
