Grizzly harriers close out league play

PASCO - In just its second, and final, Columbia Basin Big Nine 3A League meet of the season, the Sunnyside High School boys cross-country team compiled a two-win, five-loss record at the eight-school competition.

The Grizzly harriers were led by senior Juan Reynoso, who cracked the 'Top 10' with a ninth-place finish from the 51-runner varsity field.

Sunnyside's girls went 1-6 at the eight-school league competition Thursday afternoon, their only head-to-head victory coming against the host Pasco Bulldogs, who weren't able to field a full five-member squad.

The Lady Grizzlies' top finisher yesterday was sophomore Kayla Gonzalez. She recorded a 31st place finish from a field of varsity runners that numbered 49.

Gonzalez's time of 22:59 on the 5,000-meter Pasco course was a full four minutes and 41 seconds off the winning pace of 18:18, set by Kamiakin High School senior Stephanie Rexus. The girls race winner was never really pushed by any of the competitors, as the next closest finisher, Braves teammate Michelle Fletcher, came across the finish line 45 seconds behind Rexus.

Sunnyside had six other girls, besides Gonzalez, running in Thursday's varsity competition. They included sophomore Betsy Reynoso, 36th place in 23:23; sophomore Griselda Diaz, 39th place in 24:12; sophomore Aidee Cisneros, 42nd place in 25:24; sophomore Fabiola Equihua, 46th place in 28:02; senior Dezma Hernandez, 47th place in 28:31; and freshman Lilibeth Cruz, 48th place in 28:36.

Two of Sunnyside's girls who competed in the 5,000-meter JV race yesterday actually posted faster times than the final two varsity finishers for the Lady Grizzlies. They were juniors Erika Chavez and Margarita Barcenas with clockings of 27:42 and 28:18, respectively.

The Sunnyside senior Reynoso finished the varsity boys race in a time of 16:38. That was good for ninth-place honors overall.

The boys race winner was Kamiakin senior Anthony Armstrong with a clocking of 14:55. The top six individual finishers in Thursday's boys varsity race all hail from Kamiakin.

Also representing the Grizzly boys in yesterday's varsity competition were senior Omar Cantu, 27th place in 17:31; senior Nathan Gonzalez, 33rd place in 17:58; senior Reyes Cuevas, 34th place in 18:00; junior Eduardo Cuevas, 41st place in 18:34; junior Manuel Dimas, 43rd place in 18:47; and senior Eric Espindola, 45th place in 19:03.

The SHS cross-country squads are scheduled to compete at the 3A District meet in Wenatchee next Thursday, Oct. 20.
