ZILLAH - The 1B Bickleton High School boys cross-country team ran a strong meet yesterday in Zillah against 1A Goldendale and Granger, as well as the Leopards.
Junior Peter Clinton finished the 3.1 mile course in third place with a time of 17:51.
"This meet could not have gone better," said Bickleton Coach Darrell Lang. "We beat Goldendale in a show down of Klickitat County teams as we had 86 points to their 129 and our top three runners all beat their top runner."
The top runner at the meet was Zillah's Zach Collins who finished in a time of 17:18 over the mixed course of grass, track, gravel and asphalt.
Bickleton didn't have any runners in the girls race, but Zillah runner Jessica Walker came in first in that race, clocking a time of 23:00.9.
Bickleton's top finishers in the boys competition after Clinton were eighth grader Troy Roberts, who finished 14th with a time of 18:33 and freshman Brandon Berk, who finished 17th crossing the finish line in 18:53, just ahead of top Goldendale runner Weston Lewis who finished 18th with a time of 18:55.
"We were using this meet as a tune up to next Friday's all important (Regionals) meet and using Goldendale as representative of the three teams we will need to outscore (Liberty Bell, Oroville and Lake Roosevelt) as we battle those teams for two spots to State," said Lang.
"The top 10 individuals will qualify for State from (Regionals), but we really hope that we can get the whole team there, as it would be a great experience for this young team."
Other Bickleton finishers were eighth grader Kane Lowe, who crossed the line in 22nd place with a time of 19:35, freshman Michael Underwood who finished 30th, after clocking 21:24, and juniors Joshua Cummings and Christian Mittring.
Bickleton will next be running at the Regional competition in Wenatchee on Thursday, Oct. 27.
