KENNEWICK - The Lady Grizzly soccer squad ended its season on a high note, earning a 1-0 victory over the Kennewick Lions yesterday.
It was the second victory for the Sunnyside team, but it was also the last since last night's match was the final match for the Lady Grizzlies this season.
Sunnyside scored the lone goal in the first minute of the match, but it was to become a back-and-forth affair.
The goal was made possible when Anna Lugo gained control of the ball in the middle of the field. She passed the ball to teammate Karla Osorio, who scored on the opportunity.
Sunnyside had a total of 15 attempts on the goal.
Lady Grizzly keeper Jessica Cardenas stopped 12 attempts made by the Lions.
"Kennewick gave us a really good game both defensively and offensively," said Sunnyside soccer Coach Sylvia Villagrana.
She said the match was exciting to watch as the two teams battled for control of the ball on the field.
"The Kennewick coach was very impressed with our defensive player, Anna Lugo, who did very well," said Villagrana.
She said it was difficult to end the season knowing the Lady Grizzlies suffered several injuries throughout, but it was a pleasant ending, giving the three seniors a victory at the finish.
"Every season is a challenge no matter what you expect to see," said Villagrana, who anticipates 10 players will return next season as seniors.
Sunnyside ended its season with a league record of 2-12, 2-13-1 overall.
