GRANGER - Maricela Chavez scored early and often, tallying four goals to pace the Mabton Lady Viking soccer team to a 5-0 victory at Granger.
Chavez broke through for two goals in the first half, scoring on breakaways in the 12th and 25th minutes.
The score remained 2-0 Mabton at the half and looked like it might stay that way before Mabton rallied with three goals in the final 15 minutes of play.
The surge began when Cristina Gonzalez assisted Chavez with a goal, followed by Micki Williams heading in a goal off of a shot deflected by the Granger keeper.
Mabton wrapped up its scoring when Chavez collected a throw-in by teammate Marlen Chavez and booted it in the goal.
Coach Elizabeth Garcia said her team's training is paying off for the Lady Vikes (2-0). She added the margin could have been greater, noting that Williams had a pair of one-on-one opportunities against Granger's keeper in the half.
For the match, Mabton had 18 shots on goal compared to six for Granger. Lady Viking keeper Maryellen Gutierrez recorded six saves.
"The last 15 minutes we pressured a lot more, our passes were getting more consistent," said Garcia. "Our girls were quicker to the ball and hungry for those goals."
Mabton is scheduled to return to action tomorrow at home against Kiona-Benton.
Garcia said a contest scheculed last weekend with Warden might be made up at a later date.
