I hate summer. What is so sad is I have always thought I liked summer; the break from school, the hot weather, tans and all that summer fun. But in reality, I hate it.
The bugs, sunburns and lack of wardrobe options really get to me. Now that I'm a 'real' adult, I don't get three months of vacation right in the middle of 100 degree weather. My favorite season is fall. The next-to-perfect autumn weather in the Yakima Valley just can't be beat.
I can't wait. The bugs start going back to wherever they came from, and most of all I get to start wearing my jackets and sweaters. It won't be too hot to take the dogs for a nice long walk, and it's still relatively warm enough to enjoy a barbecue or picnic.
As a young adult it's exciting to see school back in full swing, and to know I don't have to be a part of it. After 13 years of public school, and too many years of junior college and university, I am glad to say I don't have to go back to school. But I still get to enjoy the 'back to school' sales.
The other reason I love fall, is my birthday. This year I will turn yet another year older, 26. Though I'm not too up in years, I'm starting to get tired of watching the numbers rise. Even still, my birthday remains my favorite day of the year.
It is the one day a year I feel is earned to rest, relax and call my own; to let my hair down and spend the day on myself. No cleaning, cooking or volunteering on that day. Happy birthday to me!
