MATTAWA - The Mabton volleyball team last night had much to celebrate after winning its first match of the season, defeating Wahluke 3-0.
"We had a good day," said Lady Vikings' Coach Marty McCallum.
He said the Warriors don't have a lot of players, but his team "had a 100 percent turnaround" after being plagued with miscues against Riverview last Thursday.
The Lady Vikings won the first game of last night's match 25-21.
McCallum said there was a change in the Mabton offense and he believes his team was more motivated against the Warriors.
"They came together as a team...they celebrated the victories and talked with one another when they weren't successful," he said.
"They didn't drop their heads when they suffered a disappointment," McCallum continued, noting that was an issue last Thursday night.
The confidence continued to build and Mabton kept up the momentum, winning the next two games 25-17, 25-13, respectively.
McCallum said Wahluke played a heavy game of attack, making the Lady Vikes dig for the ball.
He said it was difficult to get a volley going, but Mabton didn't fold under the pressure. Instead, the Lady Vikes were ready for whatever came their way.
"They played excited and motivated," McCallum said of his team.
He moved Jazzee Sustaita to the right of the net and kept Jackie Cruz busy. Sustaita had four kills and a block as a result of her position.
"Jackie was aggressive and the change in offense worked well...I think the change will show more as we play against the tougher teams," said McCallum.
Cruz had two assists, six kills, four aces, five digs, two blocks, four perfect passes and was 21-for-22 from the service line.
Teammate Evelia Mendoza was responsible for nine assists, a kill, an ace, four digs and 18 successful serves.
Another eight assists were provided by Celia Diaz, who also had a kill, two aces and was 9-for-10 serving. Getting in five perfect passes apiece were Cassandra Madrigal and Angela Martinez. Madrigal was also responsible for an ace, a dig and 10 successful serves.
Mabton (1-2, 1-3) will tomorrow (Thursday) host Royal.
