Williams scores all of Mabton's goals in 4-0 shutout of Timberwolves

GOLDENDALE - Micki Williams scored a hat trick plus one in leading the Mabton Lady Viking soccer team past host Goldendale 4-0 last night.

Tuesday night's match was all Mabton from the outset, as Williams scored in the 15th minute on an assist from Marlen Chavez.

Williams backed that up with a goal in the 23rd minute, collecting a rebound off the Goldendale keeper and booting the ball into the back of the net.

Mabton led 2-0 at the half, then Williams and company removed all doubt over the second half.

She scored in the 65th minute on another deflection from the Goldendale keeper, then wrapped up scoring in the 75th minute with an assist by Maricela Chavez.

"We started off really strong, we attacked a lot and then strengthened our defense in the second half," said Coach Elizabeth Garcia.

The coach noted her team seemed to have learned its lesson from Monday's match, when Mabton started out of the gate slowly and absorbed a 2-0 defeat.

"Monday night's game was a learning experience, which is what I was hoping for," Garcia said.

Mabton overwhelmed the host Timberwolves, outshooting them 20-to-7. Most of Goldendale's shots on goals came during the second half as it tried to get back in the game.

Keeper Maryellen Gutierrez earned seven saves for Mabton in recording the shutout.

"She had a great game and the defense did a pretty good job of making sure the shots were not direct," Garcia said.

She also singled out the play of freshman sweeper Jessica Leon.

"She's normally an attacker, but she understands the game so well and has so much speed we put her in that position," the coach said. "She does a great job making sure we are structured back there on defense."

Mabton, (3-2) opens league play tomorrow at home at 6 p.m. when it takes on Royal.
