Bonnie Dunbar bronze statue to be erected next spring near Central Park parking lot island

Bill Flower is a member of the bronze statue committee, which has been organizing and fundraising for a statue of Outlook native and NASA Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar.

The statue, he said at Monday's Sunnyside City Council meeting, will be in place next spring.

The project is the culmination of the effort to honor the hometown icon and hero, who is involved in promoting educational opportunities for youth.

Flower said the artist responsible for making the statue will pour the bronze in a cast next month.

The statue is planned to be set in place on the island along South Fifth Street where motorists enter the parking lot to Central Park.

"She's (Dunbar) made Sunnyside famous," said Flower.

He said table statues can still be purchased at the cost of $3,000 and fundraising for the full-size statue is still underway. The cost of that statue is $120,000.

The statue will depict Dunbar as a child reading a book while sitting atop a bale of hay beside an adult Dunbar as an astronaut.
