WEST VALLEY - Two potential scoring drives were thwarted with key interceptions by Grizzly defenders Nathan Meyer and Marcus Sanchez, which helped the Sunnyside High School JV football team put the clamps down on the West Valley junior varsity squad this past Monday.
Sunnyside went on to score a 23-7 victory on the JV Rams' home field, which improved the junior varsity Grizzly gridders' record to 3-1 on the season.
Scoring-wise for Sunnyside last Monday, Eric Villalobos gave the JV Grizzlies an early lead with a first-quarter, 12-yard TD run. Sunnyside increased its advantage in the second quarter on a 15-yard touchdown toss from Eddie Gonzalez to Elijah Pena.
A third-quarter field goal off the foot of Sergio Lugo gave the JV Grizzlies additional padding. Sunnyside tacked on an insurance score in the final period, on a 2-yard quarterback keeper by Gonzalez.
Sunnyside's defense gave up a TD to the Rams late in the game on a trick play.
"We moved the ball well the whole game, and our defense was again solid," said Sunnyside Coach Darren Mezger.
The Sunnyside JV's next game will be at home next Monday, Oct. 3, against Kennewick.
