CLE ELUM - A tight match was blown wide open last night, Thursday, as Marisela Chavez blistered the net for five goals to pace the Lady Viking soccer team to a 6-3 win at Cle Elum.
Chavez started her scoring spree just 10 minutes into the match, when she got a foot on a pass from a Mabton teammate to find the back of the net.
The Warriors quickly tied the match at 1-1 on a through pass.
Chavez answered 20 minutes later to make it 2-1 and Cle Elum responded with a goal moments later to make it a 2-2 game at the half.
"We made some changes, we made sure we marked up on our players," Mabton Coach Elizabeth Garcia said of her team's halftime talk.
The Lady Vikes also received a boost when sharpshooting forward Micki Williams arrived for the second half.
"We had both of our forwards together again, Marisela and Micki were doing a great job of passing with each other," Garcia said of the play between her two forwards.
The result was a second-half hat trick for Chavez and a goal for Williams in helping the Lady Vikes to what proved to be a lopsided win.
Mabton players pounded 16 shot attempts against the Cle Elum goal. Lady Viking keeper Maryellen Gutierrez kept the Warriors at bay with nine saves.
Garcia said Mabton's home match tomorrow, Saturday, against Connell will be postponed because several of her players will be involved in SAT testing.
Mabton (2-1, 5-3) travels to play Grandview's varsity next Thursday.
