Benton City man convicted of May 2011 killing in Mabton

YAKIMA - Floyd Edward Koontz of Benton City was found guilty yesterday, Monday, in Yakima County Superior Court of killing Pedro Flores near Mabton last May.

The verdict, guilty of first degree manslaughter, was confirmed this morning, Tuesday, by the Yakima County prosecutor's office.

A sentencing date has not yet been established, the prosecutor's office said.

Koontz was charged with Flores' stabbing death last May near Mabton in the 3000 block of Grandview Pavement Road.

At the time charges were filed nearly a year ago, the prosecutor's office said a witness at the scene said Koontz and Flores were both armed with knives while they were arguing in the driveway. He said the witness told both men to stop and then Flores collapsed.

Koontz was arrested a short time after the killing at his residence in Benton City. He was taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, where he was treated for minor wounds before being released into police custody.
