Annual youth job fair slated for next Wednesday at SHS

The fourth annual youth job fair will return to Sunnyside High School next Wednesday, April 18.

Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley has sponsored the annual event for teens seeking summer job opportunities and skills associated with seeking employment. The event is co-sponsored by area businesses and other organizations.

Roberto Matus, director of Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley, said organizers are seeking businesses interested in offering youth job opportunities. Those businesses can either choose to participate in the interview process offering youngsters positions or businesses without open positions can provide a donation to assist with the placement of a teen.

There are currently approximately 30 job opportunities confirmed and approximately 90 youngsters have registered to participate in the job fair.

For businesses unable to offer a local teen a potential employment opportunity, sponsorships are $90. Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley will place youngsters in positions accordingly.

"Our goal is to have 50 jobs available," said Matus.

He said a private donor has already provided funding for three food handler's license classes on the day of the job fair. That provides the teens participating in the fair the opportunity to obtain a food handler's license.

Matus said the commitment for the employment opportunities is 80 hours during the summer.

"The youth are provided the opportunity to obtain job experience, experience in an interview, guidance for proper appearance when interviewing for a job and resume skills," said Matus.

Youth interested in registering for the job fair or businesses interested in assisting Sunnyside Transformation Yakima Valley with placing youngsters in a summer job can contact Sarahi Bravo at or Matus at
