MABTON - The Mabton Vikings soccer team yesterday kept Royal scoreless, 1-0, for a league victory that improves the Vikings' SCAC record to 6-2, 7-3 overall.
The win came in a rematch between the two teams, which squared off in the first match of the season back in early March. That match went Royal's way by an overtime shootout 1-0 score.
Yesterday the Vikings and the Knights battled one another throughout the match. Mabton prevailed because Lorenzo Sanchez scored on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.
Mabton Coach Junior Garcia was pleased with the win. He said, "Royal has always been a challenging opponent...they have a talented, strong team."
He said the Viking defense was the key to winning the match.
"The defense did a good job holding the Knights' down," said Garcia.
The Mabton offense, he said, took a few shots, but Royal's defenders denied them.
"My forwards played well in midfield, however their (Royal) defense is really strong," said Garcia.
He said the entire match was a defensive brawl between the teams. For every offensive move on either side, the defense on the other team had an answer.
"It was an exciting match...everyone was going back and forth," the coach said.
Both keepers had five saves each. Gerardo Barajas of Mabton was able to keep the Knights from capitalizing on any opportunities.
The Mabton JV squad suffered a 7-2 loss on the flipside.
The Vikings next Tuesday will take on the Spartans in Granger.
