Sunnyside girls relay makes history at Pasco

PASCO - The Lady Grizzly track team may not have placed any athletes in the top eight at the Pasco Invitational this past Saturday, but the girls made their mark just the same.

The Sunnyside girls 4x100 relay team achieved a personal best time of 51.67 seconds to finish 22nd among 39 foursomes competing.

That clocking may have missed the medal round, but the quartet of Vanessa Alvarez, Brittney Broersma, Alondra Quezadas and Marisa Broersma became the first Lady Grizzly 4x100 team to finish under 52 seconds in nearly a decade.

Or maybe longer.

"It's been a long time since a Sunnyside girls team was in the 51s. It's the first time since I've been here," said Coach Darren Mezger, a coach with the track program here since 2003.

"They put a time together that is ranked 16th in the state (among 3A schools)," Mezger added. "That is big for them."

The highest individual finish for the Lady Grizzlies came from Broersma in the 200 meters with an 18th place finish in 27.38.

With no placers Sunnyside did not have a team score at Pasco. Kamiakin claimed first place team honors with 74 points.

Sunnyside track athletes are at West Valley this coming Thursday for a dual meet, then travel on Saturday to the Prosser Invite.
