GRANGER - The Mabton Viking soccer team didn't give up yesterday, earning a 4-3 victory over the Spartans.
"The match began with a resounding shot off of a cross by Gil Macedo to Edgar Cisneros (of Mabton)," said Viking Assistant Coach Mike Davis.
The pass provided Cisneros an open scoring opportunity and he scored the first goal just five minutes into the match.
Coach Junior Garcia said the ball cut a path just between the Granger keeper and the crossbars.
"The Spartans had us on defense after that," he said.
Mabton held onto the 1-0 lead going into intermission, but Granger returned to the field with new determination.
"It was an intense second half," said Garcia.
It took just seven minutes in the closing half for the Spartans to score and equalize the match.
Getting a taste for scoring, the Granger team gained enough momentum to return to the Mabton goal at the 50-minute mark. Noe Ramos made the kick and slipped the ball past Mabton keeper Juan Sabedo.
Undeterred, the Vikings battled back and from approximately 30 yards away from the Spartan goal, Lorenzo Sanchez drove the ball past the crossbars in the 63rd minute.
Teammate Guillermo Macedo scored just one minute later after pushing the ball upfield.
Granger fought back, though. The Spartans gained possession and battled past the Mabton defense to get the ball to Hector Franco. He was able to kick the ball past the crossbars in the 73rd minute, placing the teams in a tied 3-3 contest.
Mabton was hungry for the win, however. The Vikings gained the forward momentum and Daniel Cambron took advantage of a pass from teammate Josh Carrasco to score the winning goal in the 75th minute of the match.
Mabton keeper Juan Sabedo kept seven attempts from making it past the crossbars.
Granger keeper Gerardo Ochoa also recorded seven saves.
The Mabton JV team won its second game of the season last night, 6-3 over Granger. Jose Andrade earned a hat trick in that match.
The Viking varsity team (7-2, 8-3) will this Thursday take to the road and compete against the Highland Scotties.
