Venema duo claim victories at Kittitas meet

KITTITAS - Senior Nic Venema and junior Jamie Venema each notched a win for the Bickleton Pirates at last Friday's Kittitas Valley Track & Field Rally.

The older of the two siblings, Nic, scored his victory in the boys pole vault. He cleared the bar at 12 feet-even, a foot higher than the second-place performance of Zeb Eilers of Kittitas (11-0).

Venema, too, had a third-place showing in the boys 110m hurdles. He got over the barriers in a time of 17.35 seconds. Kip Craig of Bridgeport won the sprint in 16.66 seconds.

The younger of the two Venemas, Jamie, picked up her win in the girls pole vault. Her leap of 8-0 easily bested the runner-up vault of 6-6, recorded by Lindsay Clerf of Kittitas.

Team-wise, Bickleton's boys placed sixth from the seven-school field. The host Coyotes won the boys team title.

Peter Clinton returned to Bickleton with a second-place finish in the boys 800m run. He clocked a time of 2:14.33. The winning time was 2:07.98, set by Kittitas senior Julian Avalos.

Clinton, a junior, also placed fourth in the 1600m with a clocking of 5:05.00. The mid-distance race was won by Matt Schwittay of LaSalle (4:52.88).

The one other Bickleton boy to come away with Top-4 finishes was junior Justin Roberts. He was third in the pole vault (9-6), and placed fourth in the triple jump (35-1.25).

In the girls team scoring, Bickleton placed eighth from a 10-school field. Kittitas won the girls team title.

The junior Venema, besides winning the pole vault for the Lady Pirates, was third in the 300m hurdles and fourth in the long jump.

In the longer of the two hurdles races, Venema clocked a time of 55.56 seconds. Entiat junior Heather Segle was first with a clocking of 49.69.

In the long jump, Venema's leap of 14-4 was fourth best on the day from among the girls. Ashleigh Fraser of Cle Elum won the event with a jump of 15-1.25.

Venema was the only Bickleton girl to manage a Top-4 finish at Friday's meet.
