MABTON - The Mabton soccer team secured its ninth league victory yesterday by defeating Naches, 3-1.
That improves the Vikings' overall record to 10-4, and there are just two regular season matches left. This coming Saturday, April 28, Mabton will travel to Connell. Next Tuesday, May 1, the Vikes will host Highland.
Winds gusted as much as 25 miles per hour during yesterday's match against the Rangers, but Mabton was seemingly undaunted.
The Vikings scored the first goal 24 minutes into the opening half as a result of a header by Daniel Cambron.
The Rangers battled back and Logan Swain drove in a 25-yard shot to equalize the match eight minutes later. It would be the only goal for Naches.
The teams were tied 1-1 going into halftime, and were prepared to battle to the very end.
The second half remained even until the 71st minute. That's when Mabton's Edgar Cisneros spotted a scoring opportunity and took advantage of an opening in the Ranger defense. The Viking scored on a rebound to give Mabton a 2-1 lead.
Five minutes later teammate Crisantos Chavez added insurance, getting the ball between the crossbars on a cross shot.
That was the final goal of the match, giving Mabton the 3-1 victory.
