KENNEWICK - The Sunnyside Grizzly boys track team had one of its best showings of the season yesterday in winning one of two head-to-head match-ups during a four-team CBBN double dual meet at Southridge High School.
Sunnyside defeated Kennewick 90-50 on Thursday but was outpointed by Kamiakin, 99-46.
"We got a win under our belt," said Grizzly Coach Darren Mezger. "It seems like top to bottom we competed really well as a team," he added of efforts by the Sunnyside boys and girls yesterday.
Reyes Cuevas and Miguel Guzman sparked Sunnyside by earning first place honors in the 400m (52.49) and javelin (165-10), respectively.
Eduardo Salmeron also claimed top honors for the Grizzlies with a first-place leap of 40-5 in the triple jump. Teammate Sergio Lugo was second in the event at 40-4.
The top three finishers in each event scored points for their respective teams, and Salmeron added to the Grizzlies' haul with third place finishes in the high jump (5-8) and the long jump (20-3).
Elijah Pena also gave Sunnyside a boost with a pair of third place finishes in the 110m hurdles (17.93) and 300m hurdles (43.65)
In addition, the Sunnyside 4x400 relay team of Sergio Lugo, Eduardo Cuevas, Audiel Sanchez and Cuevas recorded a runner-up time of 3:45.64.
"We are starting to peak right now and on top of that we competed well despite missing a couple of people due to injury," Mezger said, noting that he hopes Juan Reynoso and Eric Amaro will be available for a CBBN meet against Pasco and Eastmont next week.
Due to the prom tomorrow night, Sunnyside will take a small contingent to the Jewett Invitational in Ellensburg on Saturday.
