YAKIMA - Eddie Garcia scored two goals to spark the Sunnyside Grizzly soccer team to a 3-1 CBBN victory at West Valley last Saturday.
The victory secured Sunnyside a home District play-in match this coming Thursday against likely either Kamiakin or West Valley. The loser-out contest will begin at 5 p.m. at the Chief Kamiakin field.
Sunnyside took charge early on Saturday against the Rams with a goal by Abrahan Garcia in the 12th minute. He was assisted by Ricardo Leal for the score.
Eddie Garcia then scored what proved to be the game-winning goal when he beat a defender and found the back of the West Valley net in the 24th minute.
"We were playing as a team, communicating and moving the ball really well," Sunnyside Coach David Guevara said of his team's fast start. "They (the Rams) are a team fighting for sixth place and we told the guys they needed to show up. West Valley is a team that will run at you the whole game."
The Rams did just that in the 32nd minute when Jesse Esquivel scored to make it a 2-1 contest at the half.
Garcia then sealed the deal in the 60th minute when he collected a carom from a previous shot and tapped the ball into the West Valley goal. "He was in the right place at the right time," Guevara said.
Keeper Cristian Vargas recorded five saves in goal for Sunnyside. The Grizzlies had 12 shots on goal for the match.
Sunnyside (7-6, 8-6-1) closes out the regular season at home tomorrow, Tuesday, against Kennewick.
Admission for Thursday's home playoff game is $5 for adults, $4 for students (middle and high school students need to show ASB cards) and $4 for senior citizens.
If fourth-seeded Sunnyside wins Thursday, it will advance to another loser-out match this coming Saturday at second-seed Kennewick.
